Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) is an intermediate step between Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) and Lithium ion (Li-ion) battery packs. Originally developed as a replacement for Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries, NiMH offers twice the capacity as the equivalent sized NiCd. NiMH is also lighter and more environmentally friendly than NiCd.

Less volatile than lithium battery chemistries, NiMH does not require protection circuitry and is not subject to the burdensome lithium battery shipping regulations. The trade-off is that NiMH batteries have a shorter cycle life, lower energy density and a higher self-discharge rate.
